22 Things I’d tell my younger self after 22 years on this planet

One thing I have done a lot of this year is reflecting. Mostly because I have been stuck inside with little else to do but also because I know reflecting is the best way to learn how to move forward.

Since it is my 22nd birthday today I have thought about what I would tell my younger self if I could go back in time. I used to worry so much when I was in high school. I spent a lot of time and energy trying to please other people. My self-belief was fuelled by the validation of others. If I could go back in time this is what I think I’d say:

  1. It does get better, but then it gets worse again but then better. Life is just like that.
  2. You don’t have to deal with everything alone.
  3. You need therapy girl, but it turns out everyone does really. It is not a big deal and it is definitely worth it.
  4. Take care of your body, don’t spend all your time hating it. It deserves to be loved.
  5. Forgive yourself for the days you make mistakes and you don’t love yourself as much as you should. Moving forward is what matters.
  6. You don’t need to be good at everything, and you won’t be but that is okay.
  7. You are allowed to be proud of yourself and you should be!
  8. You should talk about your passions more, you will meet some of your best friends that way.
  9. People like you, no I am being serious, they really do like you just as you are.
  10. Drink more water. Especially in the summer of 2018 …… Kidney stones hurt and make you miss Heathers the Musical on the West End.
  11. Stop trying to be a runner, there are other forms of exercise like yoga and strength training.
  12. Deciding what you want to do in life is not just about picking a job, it’s about who you want to be and what you value?
  13. You won’t please everyone, at the end of the day, the most important person to please is yourself.
  14. You don’t find out that you are the princess of Genovia or get into Hogwarts but reading never stops being one of your favourite ways to relax and escape.
  15. You met somebody and they love you for who you are, you don’t need to try to change yourself for anyone.
  16. First-year of University does not go at all the way you thought it would but you do come out the other side
  17. You make mistakes and have regrets but so does everyone. They are part of the puzzle when it comes to figuring out how you are. You are probably going to write another list when you are 44 and it will have way more mistakes on it.
  18. Pistachio ice cream is so good! When you go to Rome don’t wait until the second last day to try it …. yes you do go to Rome … and Greece, Portugal and Cuba.
  19. If something gives you a lot of anxiety and unnecessary stress then that is a valid reason to not do it.
  20. The key is not to give up. You will feel like you might be making a mistake a lot but not taking the risk will be the biggest mistake of them all.
  21. You won’t have a great day every day, or even a mediocre day. Some days will be utterly rubbish but then you go to sleep and it is a new day.
  22. You are a good person with a good heart, remember that and everything will be okay

That’s the end of the list. It was actually very therapeutic to write. Is there anything on this list you would also tell your younger self?
